Mid Cape Weekender: Yarmouth Turns 250, the Dads Get Main Street, and a Climate Giant Comes to a Cotuit Church

Last week we pointed you at the Cape League openers and a tent full of jam-band noise. This week the calendar tilts toward things that only happen once. Yarmouth marks 250 years of independence Saturday at Fred Thacher Park. Sunday is Father's Day — 350 classic cars on Main Street, a pig roast at the brewery, a brunch train down the line. And Tuesday night, Bill McKibben — the man who wrote the first book most of us ever read about climate change — sits down in a Cotuit church with a couple hundred neighbors. Below is the whole week, sorted by how you'd actually spend it. The ones we'd clear our calendar for are marked ★. Everything else worth knowing sits underneath them.

International Day of Yoga: 108 Sun Salutations · Sat June 20 · 9 AM · Hyannis Village Green · Free A hundred and eight sun salutations, in the open air, with live music and a few hundred strangers moving in time on the town green. You don't have to be good at it. You don't have to finish all 108. You just have to show up on the grass on a June morning and be part of it. That's the whole assignment — and it's free.

★ Joe Russo's Almost Dead · Thu June 18 · Doors 5:30 PM / Show 6:30 PM · Cape Cod Melody Tent, Hyannis · Paid The best Grateful Dead project going right now, in the round, in June. JRAD doesn't so much cover the Dead as take the engine apart and rebuild it louder and stranger — long, fearless jams that go somewhere and come back. The Melody Tent is exactly the size this band should be heard in. Go early, stay for the second set, drive home with your ears ringing.

★ The Rough & Tumble in Concert · Fri June 19 · 7:30 PM · Thacher Hall, Yarmouth Port · $16 advance / $20 door A New England folk-Americana duo making their Thacher Hall premiere — story-driven, acoustic, the kind of show a small room was built for. Thacher Hall books carefully and almost never loud, which is its own quiet promise about who ends up on the stage. Advance tickets are cheaper and the hall isn't big.

The rest of the Melody Tent week: Maddox Batson (Fri 6/19, 8 PM) — the rising country-pop teenager on his Live Worldwide Tour; Changes in Latitudes (Sat 6/20, 8 PM) — the long-running Jimmy Buffett tribute, all beach-party energy; Let's Sing Taylor (Sun 6/21, 8 PM) — a Taylor Swift singalong for the Eras crowd.

★ Legacy of Liberty · Sat 6/20 · 10 AM–3 PM · Fred Thacher Park, Yarmouth Port · Free Two hundred and fifty years ago, Yarmouth declared its own independence — and Saturday the town throws the party it's been planning for a year: a living-history fair, a patriot monument dedication, colonial demonstrations, music, food vendors, and cemetery walks. A town gets one of these per quarter-millennium. Bring the kid who's learning this in school and let them watch it stand up off the page.

★ Cape Cod Bridges: History and Future · Thu 6/18 · 7 PM · Cotuit Library, Cotuit · Donation Luisa Paiewonsky of MassDOT on the two bridges every one of us drives, curses, and will watch get torn down and rebuilt — straight from the agency doing the work, not a rumor at the transfer station. No registration, donations welcome. The single most consequential thing happening to the Cape over the next decade, explained by the person who'd know.

Cape Cod Art Center continues its summer studio season in Barnstable Village — Colored Pencil, Landscape Oil/Acrylic, Expressive Gesture & Color, Drawing Fundamentals, Soft Pastels, Monotype Printing, and Mixed Media. The Hyannis HyArts Campus runs a full flamework slate — Dragons and Claws, Fancy Flowers, Glass Beads, Tropical Fish, and Seashells by the Seashore.

The Cape Cod Baseball League is in full swing across Mid Cape: the Cotuit Kettleers host Chatham (Thu) and Brewster (Tue) at Lowell Park, with a Kettleers–Harbor Hawks weekend (Fri at McKeon, Sat at Lowell); the Hyannis Harbor Hawks host Wareham (Fri), Chatham (Sun), and Harwich (Tue) at McKeon Park; and the Y-D Red Sox host Cotuit (Fri), Bourne (Sat), and Falmouth (Tue) in South Yarmouth. All free.

Line dancing and the Tuesday-night dance party run all week at Dennis Center for Active Living; Mashantum Tennis Club opens its organized-doubles and junior-ladders season in Dennis.
