Last week we sent you to Yarmouth's 250th, the Father's Day car show, and a climate giant in a Cotuit church. This week the season stops warming up and begins for real. The Cape Playhouse — the oldest professional summer theater in the country — raises its curtain on Sondheim's Into the Woods. Cotuit throws its whole campus open, free, on Saturday. The Melody Tent runs a marquee stretch that ends with Chelsea Handler in the round. And with the Fourth a week out, Hyannis gathers to read Frederick Douglass aloud. Below is the whole week, sorted by how you'd actually spend it. The ones we'd clear our calendar for are marked . Everything else worth knowing sits underneath them.

🆓 The Best Free Thing This Week

Piece by Piece VIII Opening Reception · Fri June 26 · 5:30–7:30 PM · Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cotuit · Free About 150 local artists each paint a single panel, and Friday night you watch all of them assembled into one enormous collaborative work — live, while you have a glass of something and look at who did what. It's part art opening, part barn-raising, and the only night you'll catch the picture coming together instead of already hung. Walk in free, find your neighbor's panel, stay for the reveal.

🎶 Music Worth Getting Off Your Couch For

Chelsea Handler: The High and Mighty Tour · Sat June 27 · Doors 7:00 / Show 8:00 PM · Cape Cod Melody Tent, Hyannis · From $74 The biggest name to play the tent this week, telling you things you'd only say to your closest friends, in a round room where the stage spins and there's no safe distance. Handler has spent twenty years saying the unsayable for a living, and theater-in-the-round is exactly the wrong place to hide. One night, then the tour moves on.

Stories in Swing: Shawnn Monteiro & Cape Cod Jazz Quartet · Fri June 26 · 7:30–9:30 PM · Cultural Center of Cape Cod, South Yarmouth · From $30 Shawnn Monteiro learned the standards at the kitchen table from a father who played with Duke Ellington, and she sings them like family stories — backed Friday by four of the Cape's best (Steve Ahern, Fred Boyle, Ron Ormsby, Bart Weisman) in a room small enough to hear the brushes on the snare. The kind of jazz night that used to require a drive to the city.

Cape Cod Ukulele Concerts · Mon 6/29 · 5:30 PM · Hyannis Village Green · Free. Cathy Hatch's ukulele group plays bluegrass and pop on the green; bring a chair. And Cape Harmony's all-treble a cappella summer show lands twice — Mon 6/29 at First Baptist, Hyannis, and Tue 6/30 at Cotuit Federated Church (both 7:30 PM, from $12).

Out in the bars and on the farms: Love Farms in West Dennis runs music daily (Doghouse Tenants 6/25, Heartland Radio Band 6/26, Nico Rivers + Guess Method 6/27, Jared Moore + Jack Holland & Friends 6/28, Diamond Blues Band 6/29, WildFlower Lane 6/30); O'Shea's Olde Inne stays busy (Pitchfork 6/25, The Wildlife Band + The Skiffs 6/27, Sean Murphy's Irish Session + Fred Clayton's Sunday Blues Jam 6/28, Open Mic with Rose Martin 6/29); the Ocean House Beach Bar in Dennis Port has John Dillon (Sat) and Dan Felix (Tue) on the sand; The Loft Shack in West Yarmouth runs sunset sets all weekend; Cape Cod Beer has Darling (Fri) with Red River BBQ; and the LandShark / Margaritaville courtyard and poolside sets run every single day.

The Close
