On Saturday, Cotuit gets a roomful of authors. On Sunday, the conversations move to West Barnstable, where two pairs of bestselling writers take the stage at Tilden Arts.

Meanwhile, West Dennis is celebrating the last Saturday of its harvest festival. Osterville's children are preparing to parade through the village. And Yarmouth Port has arranged for a 1977 Japanese horror movie to be shown outside the Edward Gorey House.

There is plenty for people who prefer a quieter afternoon, too: a woodturning demonstration at Fuller Farm, a guided walk through Crocker Neck, two village art receptions, a library fundraiser with spaghetti, and a Tuesday class about plants most of us pull out of the garden.

Choose the one that feels worth leaving the house for. Then see what else is happening nearby.

★ marks an editor's pick. All times Eastern Daylight Time. Prices and registration information were checked Wednesday morning, October 21; ticket availability can change. Unless admission is explicitly listed as free, check the host rather than assume.

☀️ Weather: Wednesday brings showers and strong northeast winds. Thursday's rain should clear early, but northern gusts could reach roughly 37 mph. Friday through Monday look substantially better—mostly sunny, cool and dry, with Saturday near 53°F and Sunday near 57°F. Check the organizer before going to outdoor events, particularly those with no published weather plan.

🌅 Sunset: around 5:45 PM this weekend. Anything starting at 6 PM outdoors will be in the dark, so bring a layer and a flashlight.

📚 The Weekend for Readers

Two days, six conversations, one festival

Four conversations, two passes, and Nathaniel Philbrick to close the day.

🏷️ Best for: readers · Cost: $20–$35 · Book ahead: yes, buy a pass

Sat, Oct 24 · 10 AM–4 PM · Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Road

Time

Conversation

10–11 AM

Isaac Fitzgerald with Kwame Alexander · American Rambler

11:15 AM–12:15 PM

Victoria Christopher Murray with Kwame Alexander · A Pair of Aces

1–2 PM

John Searles with Lois Cahall · Helen Gurley Brown, Marilyn Monroe and their fictional reimaginings

2:15–3:15 PM

Nathaniel Philbrick with Bruce Nichols · The Rush

The structure makes it possible to spend a morning or an afternoon with two conversations rather than commit the whole day.

Saturday admission: $35 full day; $20 morning pass or $20 afternoon pass. No single-panel tickets are offered.

The organizer says lunch preorders have closed. Full-day ticket holders may bring their own lunch. Books must be purchased at the festival to qualify for a signing.

Same festival, new stage: two pairs of novelists on a Sunday afternoon.

🏷️ Best for: mystery and historical-fiction fans · Cost: check box office · Tip: arrive by 2:45 for the 3 PM talk

Sun, Oct 25 · 1:30–4 PM · Theatre at Tilden Arts, Cape Cod Community College, 2240 Iyannough Road, West Barnstable

The second day changes venues and introduces two new conversations.

1:30–2:30 PM: Hank Phillippi Ryan in conversation with Joseph Finder. Their featured discussion includes Mother, Daughter, Sister, Stranger.

3–4 PM: Ariel Lawhon and Kristin Harmel, under the heading "Historical Fiction Queens." The program requests arrival by 2:45 PM.

Signings follow the conversations, again restricted to books purchased at the festival.

Tickets are handled by the Tilden Arts box office. We could confirm the program but not the current price or remaining seats through the ticket system. Check directly before making the trip.

Sat, Oct 24 · 10–11 AM · 871 Main Street, Cotuit · Free; register

Cape Cod native George Michelsen Foy discusses his novel The Winterpoor. The library had registration open when checked. A useful alternative for anyone who wants an author conversation without committing to the larger festival.

🎃 Halloween Arrives a Week Early

Parades, trunks, a dog party and a very strange film

Costumes, a flagpole and a walk to the library green. That's the whole plan, and that's the charm.

🏷️ Best for: kids in costume · Cost: free · Book ahead: no, just show up

Sat, Oct 24 · 3–4:30 PM · Meet at Parker Road and Bay Street · Free

This one has a simple plan. Wear a costume, meet at the village flagpole, walk through Osterville and finish on the Village Library green at 43 Wianno Avenue.

The library and Osterville & Mashpee Rotary are organizing treats and Halloween surprises at the end. No advance registration is listed.

Candy from car trunks, and real trucks to explore.

🏷️ Best for: little kids and truck lovers · Cost: free · Tip: parking may be limited, so arrive early

Sat, Oct 24 · 1–3 PM · Lower parking lot, Sandy Neck Beach Park, 425 Sandy Neck Road · Free

Sandy Neck staff and West Barnstable firefighters combine a Trunk or Treat with Touch-a-Truck. The vehicles are a large part of the attraction, particularly for younger children who might enjoy exploring them as much as collecting candy.

Costumes are encouraged. Parking may be limited, and no advance booking is listed. Questions: 508-362-8300.

Sat, Oct 24 · 2–5 PM · Devil's Purse Brewing Company, 120 Great Western Road, South Dennis

The dogs get their own costume gathering. A contest, vendors, food trucks and Animal Rescue League outreach make up the afternoon, with the Friends of Dennis Dog Park involved.

The organizer does not state a general admission fee or registration requirement, so check before going. Bring a dog that is comfortable around other dogs and crowds.

A bizarre 1977 horror film, shown outside at Edward Gorey's house.

🏷️ Best for: grown-ups who love strange films · Cost: $18 · Bring: a lawn chair and layers. The sun sets around 5:45, so it'll be dark. Not for small children.

Sun, Oct 25 · 6–7:45 PM · 8 Strawberry Lane, Yarmouth Port · $18

The 1977 film House belongs to a particular kind of movie night. It is bizarre, theatrical and deliberately excessive, with an abundance of fake blood.

The Edward Gorey House is showing it outside on the grounds, with popcorn and other concessions for sale.

Bring a lawn chair and dress for a clear but cool Sunday evening. The rain date is Thursday, October 29. This is not a good choice for small children or anyone who dislikes graphic horror.

Two murders, one evening, and a $0 ticket option.

🏷️ Best for: date night and mystery fans · Cost: $0–$40 · Runs: about 2 hours

Mon, Oct 26 · 7:30 PM · Sigel Black Box, Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Road

Two original staged readings, two mysteries, one evening.

Under the Knife, by Claire C. Edwards, begins with the murder of a surgeon. Bumped Mid-Flight, by Mark Roderick, puts the employees of a water-filtration company on a retreat with a CEO who has an ulterior motive. Nicholas Dorr directs both readings.

Tickets are general admission with several price choices: $40, $35, $20, $15 for members, and a $0 option. The advertised running time is around 120 minutes.

Thu, Oct 22 · 6–7:30 PM · Dennis Public Library, 5 Hall Street, Dennis Port · Free

Filmmaker and author Christopher Seufert talks about Memento Gorey, with documentary material and previously unpublished work connected to Edward Gorey.

No registration is required. For Gorey admirers, it makes an interesting companion to Sunday's movie night.

📨 Know a family with costumes already picked out? Send them this. The Osterville parade and Sandy Neck Trunk or Treat are both free on Saturday.

🌾 Saturday Outside

Farms, marshes, woodturners and a fire-cooked tasting

The harvest series signs off with Berliner donuts, steins and pretzels.

🏷️ Best for: families and friend groups · Cost: about $25–$42 wristband (ages 3+) · Tip: overflow parking and a shuttle are available

Sat, Oct 24 · 10 AM–1 PM · 607 Main Street, West Dennis

Love Farms ends its seven-Saturday harvest series with an Oktoberfest theme: Raspberry Berliner donuts, steins, pretzels, pumpkin painting and the familiar tastings, tours and activities.

Wristbands are required for ages 3+. The Eventbrite ticket range was approximately $24.80–$41.93 at Wednesday's check, with a lower-priced option without the stein. Confirm the actual ticket selection at checkout.

The wristband includes tasting stations, activities and vendor access. Food specials, face painting and vendor goods are extra. Overflow parking and a shuttle are available.

The festival lists music after the 10 AM–1 PM program, generally 1–4 PM. Jay Psaros Band has a separate Saturday listing with somewhat different hours, so check with the farm rather than assume the performance is accessible without a festival wristband.

Sat, Oct 24 · 11 AM–12:30 PM · Historical Society of Old Yarmouth grounds, 229 Old King's Highway, Yarmouth Port

Toodie Coombs, Mashpee Wampanoag linguist and chef, prepares roasted duck and wild turkey soup outdoors over a fire. The program brings together food, language, history and seasonal knowledge, with a tasting afterward.

Tickets are $25, or $20 for Historical Society members. A Card to Culture discount is also advertised through the Society.

The program is recommended for ages 14+, has no dietary substitutions, and is limited to 25 people. Capacity was very tight Wednesday morning. Advance registration is essential. Online sales close at 10 AM on October 24, and the rain date is October 25.

Sat, Oct 24 · 10–11:15 AM · Crocker Neck Conservation Area, Cotuit · Free; register

Ecologist Gil Newton leads a walk through a landscape that moves from beach to salt marsh to estuary. Expect more explanation and observation than speed.

Registration is required. The precise meeting location is supplied to registrants; don't simply pick a trailhead from a map. Rain or severe weather may postpone the outing.

Sat, Oct 24 · 1:30–3:30 PM · Fuller Farm Barn, 995 Route 149, Marstons Mills · Free; register

A piece of wood becomes something else while you watch.

Members of Cape Cod Woodturners demonstrate their methods and show finished objects. This is one of the week's more distinctive small-scale outings: practical craftsmanship, a working demonstration and a barn setting.

The Barnstable Land Trust registration form offers no-cost tickets, but does not publish the remaining capacity. Register before going.

Sun, Oct 25 · 10–11 AM · Eagle Pond, Cotuit · No fee published

This hike is designed around small feet and short attention spans. Adults and toddlers take a slow walk, with opportunities to stop, look around and have a snack. Siblings are welcome.

Registration is encouraged through Whelden Library, 508-362-2262, to receive the parking location and weather updates. Dogs are not permitted.

Tue, Oct 27 · 8–10 AM · Princess Beach Conservation Area, Scargo Hill Road, Dennis Village

The route begins by Scargo Lake, looking for returning waterfowl, then shifts to Corporation Beach for eiders, scoters and mergansers.

The naturalist-led program involves up to 1.5 miles of easy walking. Participants drive themselves between locations.

The Dennis Conservation Land Trust links to an RSVP form, but we could not establish the current availability or any fee. Confirm through the organization before attending.

Watch glass turn into pumpkins. Watching costs nothing.

🏷️ Best for: curious kids and grown-ups · Cost: free to watch; hands-on projects extra · Book ahead: no

Sun, Oct 25 · 10 AM–3 PM · 250 South Street, Hyannis · Free admission

The HyArts Campus and Sandwich Glass Museum's Flameworks studio host an open house featuring glassworking demonstrations, a glass pumpkin patch, and opportunities to try pendant and mosaic-pumpkin projects.

Watching is free. Hands-on projects carry separate charges; some workshop listings show $50.

It is a good stop for anyone curious about how glass art is made but not ready to book a full class.

The final weekend of this Write Out Cape Cod project invites visitors to make a Gorey-style postcard outdoors. The House provides materials, instructions and examples. No registration is required. The listed windows follow the House's weekend hours.

Movement Arts Cape Cod hosts an evening of performances, Outermost Bateria live music, dancing, costumes, refreshments and a costume contest.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Use the organizer's address at 81 Willow Avenue, rather than the conflicting address appearing in one third-party listing.

Mon, Oct 26 · Noon and 3:30 PM; Tue, Oct 27 · Noon and 3:30 PM · Cape Cinema, 36 Hope Lane, Dennis Village

Four individually dated screenings, with Tuesday's presentations listed as open-captioned. Admission prices are not published on the event page. Select the actual screening through Cape Cinema or its ticketing partner before going.

🚗 Before You Head Out

Detours, closures and what to book

Yarmouth Route 28: The town's wastewater construction notice for October 19–23 calls for a daytime closure at Parker's River Landing, 7 AM–5 PM on workdays. The published detour uses Winslow Gray Road, Forest Road and Long Pond Drive. Overnight and weekend access is one alternating lane with a temporary signal. Check the next town update for Monday and Tuesday.

Dennis Port: The Town of Dennis is reconstructing Old Wharf Road between Glendon Road and Sea Street and working on utilities on Chase Avenue. Daytime detours are expected, generally 7 AM–4 PM.

Libraries: Sturgis Library is closed Sunday, October 25. West Dennis Library is closed Saturday, October 24. Yarmouth Port Library is closed Sunday and Monday. Check these hours before combining errands with an event.

Outdoor plans: Thursday's gusty forecast particularly affects Centerville's patio storytime and Barnstable Land Trust's Words in the Wild. Saturday's walking events and Osterville parade have more favorable forecasts, but organizers have the final word on weather changes.

Registration: The Cotuit Library, Barnstable Land Trust and Council on Aging programs marked "register" are not automatic walk-ins. For capacity-limited events, a posted date does not guarantee a remaining seat.

⚓ One Last Thing

From the Celebrate Mid Cape crew

There is a particular satisfaction in seeing a village do something entirely for itself.

A group of children in costume walks from a flagpole to a library. A local woodturner shows somebody how to make a bowl. A retired neighbor buys a spaghetti supper ticket to support the little library on Main Street.

None of those things requires a spectacular stage or a crowd of thousands.

The big events are worth the attention this weekend. So are the small ones.

Send this to someone who lives three streets from one of these places and has never been inside.

See you next Wednesday.

— Arthur & the Celebrate Mid Cape Crew
