And September’s postponed harbor festival, arriving on the first Sunday in October.

There’s your week: a little superstition, a little memory, and several reasons to leave lunch unplanned. Cotuit adds a storyteller beside a fire and an 1869 river expedition onstage. South Yarmouth has John Prine on Saturday night and a mandolin-led album release on Sunday afternoon. On Tuesday, a film about a bicycle journey for love has to compete with Dennis town business for your evening.

The choices are specific enough to make a plan around. That’s what the longer version is for. Keep it open, find your day, and follow the event links for tickets, registration and organizer updates.

★ = a pick we’d build part of the day around.

🗓️ Seven Days, From the Story Rug to the Town Meeting

🆓 September’s Festival Gets Five Hours of October

Sun, Oct 4 · 11:00 AM–4:00 PM · Aselton Park, Hyannis · Free admission.

The date moved. The reason to go survived it.

Cape makers, food vendors and local businesses gather beside the harbor, with Bad Apple, Natalia Bonfini and Cape Connection on the announced music lineup. There’s no admission charge to make you calculate whether you’ve stayed long enough. Go for lunch and a look around. Stay if the next song sounds good.

It is also a chance to meet the people behind something you buy. A stall lets you ask a question that a checkout page doesn’t. Give yourself enough time for the answer.

Bring a chair or blanket; the park has no seating. There’s no parking at the park itself, so use nearby public lots. Food, drinks and purchases cost extra. The organizer plans to run rain or shine except in extreme weather. October 4 is the rescheduled date.

💵 A Good Week Without a Large Ticket Bill

Free admission: Our Mixtapes, Our Selves Thursday; Spooky Stories by the Fire Friday; Barktoberfest Saturday with a free day-visitor ticket requested; and Fall Love Local Fest Sunday. Purchases at the outdoor events are separate.

Free movement: Yoga with Pam Friday in Centerville, then Monday line dancing and Tuesday chair yoga at DCAL. The Tuesday class is walk-in; Friday’s in-person yoga is drop-in, while its Zoom option requires registration.

Ten dollars or less: History on Tap is $10, or $5 for museum members. Zumba with Rick is $10. Both appear below with their times and locations.

The useful price is the one that gets the right person out the door. Free programs can still require a reservation; the details below say where.

★ A Mile of Old Houses, a Cassette, and a Prine Song

Sat, Oct 3 · 10:00 AM · Yarmouth Port Common · $20 members / $25 nonmembers; reserve ahead.

The car gives you the outline of Yarmouth Port. Architectural historian Gary Sachau gives you two hours to look at what’s inside it: buildings from the eighteenth through mid-twentieth centuries, along roughly a mile of Route 6A. A road you use becomes a place you can read. The tour starts and finishes at the Common. Reserve by Friday, October 2, at 10 AM, or earlier if the 25-person limit is reached. Wear comfortable shoes. Sunday, October 4 is the rain date; registrants receive weather updates.

Thu, Oct 1 · 6:00–7:30 PM · Dennis Public Library, 5 Hall Street, Dennis Port · Free; no registration.

You could fit only so much on a cassette, which meant leaving something off. That was part of the message. David Grady talks about Generation X’s music and memories, the songs people chose for one another and the order they put them in. The technology is old. The memory of who gave you the tape may be perfectly intact. No ticket, no registration, just Thursday night at the library.

Sat, Oct 3 · 7:30 PM · Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth · $35 / $30 members.

Prine could make an ordinary life feel worth stopping for. Mottley James brings Derek Dibbern, Catie Flynn, Jim Nosler, Sarah Swain and the Happy Enchilada Band together to spend Saturday with those songs. Acoustic arrangements give way to full-band country blues; the writing holds the evening together. A good choice for the person who still listens to the words. Tickets are on the linked event page.

🦪 Two Raw Bars, One Dog Contest, and Friday’s Dinner

Sat, Oct 3 · Noon–5:00 PM · Cape Cod Beer, 1336 Phinney’s Lane, Hyannis · $20 general admission.

Noon is a reasonable time to start arguing about oysters. Cape Cod Beer gives the discussion five hours, with local vendors and music, and a portion of proceeds benefiting Barnstable Clean Water Coalition. Basic admission does not include shellfish or beverages. Raw-bar tickets are listed at six for $10, with each redeemable for an oyster, shrimp or littleneck. The Cape Connection’s headline set is listed for 2:00 PM. Use the event page to choose the appropriate ticket package.

Sat, Oct 3 · 4:30–9:00 PM · Cape Playhouse lawn, 820 Main Street, Dennis · Ticketed fundraiser.

By 4:30, Dennis has opened its own raw bar on the Cape Playhouse lawn. The Lambton family’s festival supports Compassionate Care ALS, with seafood, music, dancing and fundraising activities carrying the evening to nine. The organizer describes general admission as including oysters, the raw bar and drinks; an additional food truck is planned. Check the linked event and ticket options for current pricing and access.

Sat, Oct 3 · 11:00 AM–2:00 PM · Blue Water Resort, South Yarmouth · Free day-visitor ticket requested.

Somebody in South Yarmouth has to judge a dog costume contest on Saturday. The rest of us get to watch. Blue Water Resort welcomes day visitors for music, vendors and an MSPCA donation drive alongside the dogs. Reserve through the linked event listing and check its attendance details before bringing your dog. Purchases are separate from free admission.

Fri, Oct 2 · 9:00 AM–1:00 PM · Osterville Historical Museum grounds, 155 West Bay Road.

Go with a dinner in mind and leave room for the thing you hadn’t thought of. Produce, flowers, baked goods, cheeses and specialty foods fill Friday morning on the museum grounds. The season is still running; October hasn’t sent this market home. Rain or shine, with purchases paid separately.

🎶 Three Days on Old Main Street, Friday in the Taproom

Chris LeBeau live at Cape Cod Beer — Fri, Oct 2, 6:00–9:00 PM · 1336 Phinney’s Lane, Hyannis. Acoustic covers with rock, blues, alternative and reggae influences in the taproom. Wine and nonalcoholic drinks are also available. The organizer does not list an admission charge; drinks are purchased separately.

One address gives you three quite different weekends. At 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, the Cultural Center goes from songs and stories on Friday to a songwriter tribute on Saturday and a bluegrass album release on Sunday. Each is separately ticketed:

Zoë with a Z! pairs Lewis’s songs, stories and multi-instrumental playing with recorder virtuoso Roxanne Layton. Little Storms offers a Sunday afternoon of bluegrass, original songs and ensemble playing led by mandolinist Ethan Setiawan. Friday makes room for the recorder; Sunday puts the mandolin at the center. The table keeps the dates and prices straight.

🎭 A River Expedition, Two Q&As, and a Bicycle Journey for Love

Thu–Sat, Oct 1–3 · 7:30 PM; Sun, Oct 4 · 2:00 PM · Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Road · Ticketed.

Put ambition and clashing personalities into boats, add the Colorado River, and the expedition has a problem before anybody reaches the next bend. Jaclyn Backhaus’s comedy returns to 1869, with Jakob White directing in Cotuit. The danger supplies the stakes; the people supply the comedy. Three evening performances and a Sunday matinee give you four ways in. Choose the date in the venue’s ticket system for prices.

🏛️ What People Hid, What They Kept, and What We Care For

Sat, Oct 3 · 3:00 PM · Jacob Sears Memorial Library, 23 Center Street, East Dennis.

Somebody put an object where nobody would see it and believed the house was safer because it was there. Steven Flack explores that practice: the things people concealed inside buildings to protect the occupants from evil spirits. It is a small, unsettling window into what earlier residents feared and what they thought they could do about it. The society does not state admission or registration terms on its page.

Two Mornings When the Place Gets Something Back

💪 Monday Can Start on the Dance Floor

A class is sometimes easier to try when it costs nothing and doesn’t ask you to commit to the next three months. Dennis has that opening this week; Centerville has two more ways to put movement on the calendar.

  • Yoga with Pam — Fri, Oct 2, 10:30–11:30 AM · Centerville Public Library, 585 Main Street · Free. In-person Hatha yoga is drop-in; bring a mat. The Zoom option requires registration.

👨‍👩‍👧 The Children Get the Fire. The Teenagers Get the Metal.

There’s a story rug for the small ones, a craft space where the grown-up stays, and copper to stamp for the teenagers. Start with the age and the amount of time you have. The week gives you options on both sides of the weekend.

🗳️ Dennis Has Questions on Saturday and Business on Tuesday

A question for a Select Board member can have its own appointment. So can a vote. These two Dennis entries are worth marking before the entertainment fills the calendar.

Select Board drop-in office hours — Sat, Oct 3, 10:00 AM–noon · Dennis Public Library, Dennis Port. Carlyn Carey welcomes questions and ideas about town matters.

Dennis Special Town Meeting — Tue, Oct 6, 6:00 PM · D-Y Intermediate/Middle School, 286 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth. Note the venue: this is Dennis town business held in South Yarmouth. Registered Dennis voters may speak and vote; nonvoters have designated seating. The linked town notice also provides the meeting warrant and participation information.

📣 Something We Should Know About?

If there’s an event in Barnstable, Dennis or Yarmouth that belongs in a future issue, reply with the organizer’s link, date and place. The smaller rooms belong here too.

The Close

You could come home from Saturday’s history talk looking at your own house a little differently. Or from Thursday’s library evening with a song in your head that you haven’t thought about in twenty years.

None of those requires an extraordinary week. Just a decision before the week gets away from you.

Send this to the person you’d like beside you, and give them two choices. That usually works better than “we should do something sometime.”

See you Wednesday.
