The beach chairs are probably behind something now. A rake, perhaps. A bag of things you were going to take to the transfer station. It seemed reasonable to put them there.

Saturday’s bonfire and Sunday’s fireworks suggest retrieving them. The Seaside Festival has most of a long weekend accounted for, while Taylor-Bray Farm offers the sort of afternoon that can end with a pumpkin in the back seat. In Osterville, Friday’s farmers’ market is the last one on the season’s calendar. Take the bigger bag.

There is plenty indoors, too. Men on Boats reaches its final weekend in Cotuit. Kotoko Brass has Saturday night in South Yarmouth, Sarah Swain & The Oh Boys have Sunday, and James Rosenblum and Jodie DeSalvo will fit Rhapsody in Blue onto one piano with four hands. You’ll have to make choices. That is a good problem for October to give us.

🆓 The Best Free Thing: Look Up for a Change

Sun, Oct 11 · 10–11:15 AM · Fuller Farm, Marstons Mills · Free; register

Most of us consult the sky only when it looks as though it might interfere with lunch. Marine meteorologist Dr. Alex Kinsella offers a better acquaintance with it: a presentation and a walk through Fuller Farm’s meadows, considering the connections among sun, sea, storms and clouds.

It is a small enough commitment to leave most of Sunday ahead of you, and a useful reason to start the day somewhere other than the kitchen table. Register through Barnstable Land Trust for the meeting details. Rain moves the program inside the barn.

A Weekend That Doesn't Need an Expensive Ticket

There are several ways to build a day around free admission. Spooky Stories by the Fire gives Friday evening to families, 5:30–7 PM in Cotuit. Saturday’s Neptune’s Oktoberfest starts its music at noon in Hyannis, with free admission and purchases separate. The HyARTS Artist Shanties are free to browse Friday–Sunday from 11 AM along Ocean Street; buying something is your decision.

For Sunday, Just Like That plays a free, all-ages show at Neptune’s at 6 PM, doors at 5. Teens have their own free Pride Dance, 7–9 PM at West Yarmouth Library, ages 13–18. Preregister for a goody bag.

A low admission bill still deserves an honest budget. Taylor-Bray asks for a $5 parking donation, and food or activities can cost extra. A festival afternoon can be inexpensive without being an afternoon in which nobody asks for an ice cream.

🎃 Yarmouth Has the Long Weekend

Sat–Sun, Oct 10–11 · 10 AM–5 PM · Joshua Sears Memorial Field, 1175 Route 28, South Yarmouth

Craft stalls, music, children’s entertainment and food give this gathering its familiar rhythm: browse, stop, listen, lose somebody near a stall, find them again. The main field program runs on Saturday and Sunday. The full linked schedule is worth keeping open for individual performances and children’s activities.

For the evening, make a separate plan. Saturday’s bonfire runs 6–9 PM at Bass River/Smuggler’s Beach, with DJ Patrick Treacy and a food truck. Bring blankets and chairs. Sunday’s fireworks begin 8 PM at Seagull Beach, West Yarmouth. The beach entrance boulevard is not available for parking. These are different beaches; tell the person driving which one you mean.

The Seaside 5K starts Sunday at 9 AM, with registration and number pickup from 8 AM at the Cape Cod Collaborative, 1175 Route 28. Entry is $30. Park behind the school. The free-shirt registration deadline was October 1; don’t count on that perk now.

Monday’s canoe and kayak race starts 10 AM, after 9 AM registration at Smuggler’s Beach, and follows Bass River to Wilbur Park. Race-day entry is $30 per person, including the post-race party. The advance-price deadline has passed; read the linked application for race terms. Everyone must wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD throughout; anyone under 18 needs signed parental consent. The start is weather dependent.

For a less mobile morning, the family sand sculpture contest runs Monday, 9 AM–noon at Smuggler’s Beach. The theme is “Happy 250th America.” Some households will arrive with a design. Others will discover that the moat has become the entire project.

Sat, Oct 10 · 10 AM–4 PM · 108 Bray Farm Road North, Yarmouth Port

Haywagon rides, animals, pumpkins, games and farmhouse tours give the farm its October gathering. Admission is free, with a $5 suggested parking donation; bring money for food and any separately priced activities. Rain date: Sunday, October 11.

It is an easy place to let an afternoon take its own pace. You can intend to stay for an hour. A child who has formed an attachment to a farm animal may have a different estimate.

Two Ways to Walk Through South Yarmouth’s History

North Quaker Friends Village Walking Tour is Saturday, October 10, 9 AM, with Bob Kelley tracing the houses and families of Friends Village and visiting the 1808 meetinghouse. Allow about two hours for a half-mile walk. Tickets are $20/$15 HSOY members, with a 30-person limit; online reservations close 8 AM Saturday. Get the exact meeting point when booking. Light rain does not cancel it; severe-weather changes come by email.

Historic Reservation Walking Tour + Quaker Hospitality begins Sunday, October 11, 9:30 AM at Packet Landing, South Yarmouth. Waban Webquish (Marcus Hendricks) and Bob Kelley lead an approximately two-mile, two-hour walk, exploring the history of the Indigenous reservation laid out in 1713, followed by hospitality at the Quaker grounds. $20/$15 members; 30 places; online booking closes 8:30 AM Sunday. Dress for walking in the weather. Eligible Card to Culture participants can ask HSOY about discounted tickets. Confirm the food arrangements if planning lunch around them.

🎶 Music: Choose Your Evening Before It Chooses You

Sat, Oct 10 · 7:30–9:30 PM · Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth · Ticketed

Drums drive this band, with horns, guitar, bass and keys carrying a sound that draws on Ghanaian traditions, highlife, Afrobeat and Caribbean influences. It is a promising choice for the person who says they want to hear something new and means something they can move to. Choose your tickets through the linked event page.

Sun, Oct 11 · 7:30–9:30 PM · Cultural Center of Cape Cod · $35/$30 members

Original songs, roots music, rockabilly and older country favorites fill out this Sunday set. There is a strong case for ending a weekend with live musicians instead of preparing for a Monday that, for some households, is still part of the weekend. Reserve through the linked listing.

Sat, Oct 10 · 5 PM · Warren Hall, Unitarian Church of Barnstable, 3330 Main Street · $30; grades 7–12, $10

James Rosenblum’s family-and-friends program brings pianist Jodie DeSalvo to the keyboard for a four-hand arrangement of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The Cobb’s Hill series includes a wine-and-food reception. Buy online or at the door if seats remain.

Sat, Oct 10 · 2–5 PM · Freebird Motor Lodge, West Yarmouth · Check admission terms

Cape Symphony Presents brings a patio session to the motor lodge. Put this one in the afternoon column, particularly if you’d like music without building the entire evening around a ticket. Check entry arrangements with Freebird before setting out.

At Neptune’s in Hyannis, Thursday brings Carolyn Wonderland at 7 PM, doors 6 PM. Admission is free; the individual event page now lists $0.00. Use its ticket link to arrange your place.

Friday’s A Farewell to Kings plays Rush at 7 PM, doors 6 PM; the venue displays $39.04. Saturday splits in two: Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners provide free Oktoberfest music at noon, doors 11 AM, then Dead Ahead takes on the Grateful Dead at 7 PM, with $39.04 displayed. Sunday’s Just Like That is free and all ages, show 6 PM, doors 5 PM. Check checkout totals and the individual show’s entry terms when booking.

All of these are at 607 Main Street, West Dennis. The event pages do not specify a cover charge, so check with the farm rather than assume there isn’t one.

And in Hyannis, Nikki and Eddie Childs play Cape Cod Beer, 1336 Phinney’s Lane, Saturday, 6–9 PM. Ask the brewery about any cover; food and drink purchases are separate.

In Dennis Port, Heyday plays The Pub Next Door on Route 28, Saturday, 6–9 PM. Folk, Americana, Irish tunes and originals make this a dinner-and-music option. Check with the venue about any cover.

🎭 The Stage, the Screen, and the Big Top

Thu–Sat, Oct 8–10 · 7:30 PM; Sun, Oct 11 · 2 PM · Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Road

John Wesley Powell’s expedition supplies Jaclyn Backhaus with a river, a crew and plenty of opportunities for human certainty to meet inconvenient circumstances. Jakob White directs. These are the final four performances; use the booking link for remaining seats and prices.

Cape Cinema’s Queen Budapest puts the band’s 1986 concert on the screen Wednesday, October 7, and Saturday, October 10, both at 7 PM, 36 Hope Lane, Dennis. Choose an actual dated showtime on the ticket page.

Thu, Oct 8 · 7–8 PM · Cape Cod Museum of Art, 60 Hope Lane, Dennis

Improv Cape Cod builds its first Artful Improv evening around audience suggestions and the art world. Tickets are $24 plus 60¢, or $18 plus 45¢ for members. Online sales end at noon Thursday. If you are waiting to see what you feel like after dinner, that is useful information to have now.

Oct 9–12 · Cape Cod Mall, 769 Iyannough Road, Hyannis

The white-and-blue tent has Friday 7:30 PM; Saturday 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 PM; Sunday 1:30 and 4:30 PM; Monday 7:30 PM performances. Listed seats run $30–$65 for adults and $15–$60 for children 2–12, depending on section; check fees at checkout. For ADA and companion seating, call 941-704-8572. The least expensive seats and the premium seats are different purchases; choose the section before calculating the family total.

🦪 Things Worth Arranging Around a Meal

Love Farms’ oyster-inspired Harvest Dinner is Thursday, October 8, 6–8 PM, with four family-style courses, a welcome drink and a farm tour. It requires a ticket; the organizer page sends you onward for the price.

The same farm’s Oyster Festival is Saturday, October 10, 10 AM–1 PM. Oysters, sparkling-wine tasting and a shell-painting activity are among the advertised attractions. Use the ticket/wristband information before budgeting; this is not a promise of free oysters. Both events are at 607 Main Street, West Dennis.

Sat, Oct 10 · From 1 PM · Jericho Historical Center, 90 Old Main Street, West Dennis

The Dennis Historical Society’s annual apple-pie contest invites everyone to taste after judging and visit the Captain Baker House and Barn. Entry registration ended October 6. By publication day, the invitation is to come along and see how the bakers did. Admission terms aren’t specified.

Sat, Oct 10 · 1–7 PM · 228 Lower County Road, Dennis Port · $35 adults/$14 children

The chamber lists chef-attended food stations, including Bavarian and schnitzel offerings. Check child age limits, drinks and booking arrangements with the venue. A useful option for a group whose agreement on dinner usually takes longer than dinner itself.

Sat, Oct 10 · 5–7 PM · South Yarmouth · $82/$75 members

Kim and Tim’s Mexican Street Cuisine workshop combines hands-on cooking and a shared meal. It is a single session, with recipe handouts and a hibiscus cocktail or spritzer among the advertised elements. Reserve before arriving; a culinary classroom has a more definite capacity than an outdoor festival.

For Sunday browsing, the Pelham House Fall Market runs 11 AM–4 PM at 14 Sea Street, Dennis Port. The chamber confirms vendor tables; admission terms are not listed.

🎨 Art, Outdoors and Something to Make

Fri, Oct 9 · 2–3 PM · Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis · Included with paid museum admission

Dave Holbrook discusses how Ripple Effect, his bronze-and-granite public sculpture in Orleans, moved from an idea into a finished installation. The talk takes place in Dennis, and the ticket includes time in the museum’s galleries. RSVP through the event page.

The HyARTS Artist Shanties offer a different kind of art encounter: meet makers at Bismore Park and Harbor Overlook, Ocean Street, Hyannis, Friday–Sunday from 11 AM. Free to browse. Weather can affect individual openings, so check the organizer’s updates before making a special journey.

On Thursday, 10–11:15 AM, Aubrey Carter’s mushroom walk visits Eagle Pond Preserve in Cotuit. It is free, registration is required, and leashed dogs and families are welcome. Get the precise meeting point through registration.

Earlier Thursday, 9:30–11:30 AM, Rust, Rope, and Iron begins at DCLT, 107 Sesuit Neck Road, East Dennis. Mark Kesling leads observation and drawing of historic working tools. You may attend one session without committing to all four. RSVP; bring a charged phone, drawing paper and pencils. The page doesn’t specify a fee.

On Tuesday, 4–5:30 PM, Write Out at Not Enough Acres Farm invites adults to the same DCLT headquarters to gather, find a spot outdoors and write. Bring a notebook and a chair or blanket. You can read afterward, or listen. RSVP through the organizer.

Cummaquid: Mudflats First, Oysters Afterward

Tidal Flat to Table runs Friday, October 9, 4:30–6 PM at Long Pasture, 345 Bone Hill Road, Cummaquid. Adults begin in the Discovery Center, then meet an oyster grower on the mudflats before a shucking-and-tasting lesson. $20 members/$25 nonmembers; reserve and check availability. Wear shoes that can get wet and manage uneven, muddy steps. This is one outing where sensible footwear earns its keep.

For a longer acquaintance with the place, A Nature Year at Long Pasture: Fall starts Saturday, October 10, 10 AM–noon. The adult series follows harvest, waterfowl and owls across three classes, continuing November 14 and December 12. $54 members/$60 nonmembers buys the series, rather than one Saturday drop-in. Register first and expect at least 90 minutes outdoors.

Sun, Oct 11 · 1–3 PM · Osterville Village Library · $45 including supplies

Rachelle’s needle-felting workshop makes a small cactus garden in a teacup. Two hours, wool and a needle, and you leave with something that requires remarkably little horticultural follow-through. Book using the payment link on the event page.

This week’s posted gallery hours are Wednesday–Friday, 10 AM–4 PM, and Saturday, noon–4 PM. The opening receptions were last week; these are opportunities to see the work at a quieter pace. Check admission details with the center.

A Few More Village Stops

At Whelden Memorial Library, 2401 Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable, Thursday offers Whelden Tech at 10 AM—bring the device that has been winning the argument—and Time for Tea 10 AM–noon. Drop-in storytime starts at 11 AM, aimed at preschool and kindergarten children with their caregivers. Check the library for any participation charges; none are specified in these listings.

On Saturday, the FOWL basement bookstore opens 9 AM–1 PM. Wednesday’s wool-felt pumpkin workshop starts 5 PM, for ages 16+, but is waitlist-only at this check. Call 508-362-2262 about a cancellation place before making it your evening plan.

What’s Happening At This Time meets there Friday, 10–11 AM, pairing current events with a book discussion. Call Barbara at 508-398-6662 to sign up and receive the agenda.

🤝 A Useful Hour, or Some Company

Dementia Friends begins Friday at 10 AM at Centerville Public Library, free and without registration. Stacey Cullen of the Barnstable Council on Aging leads the information session; use the event page for details.

Active Aging Week at DCAL continues within this run, with free classes through October 11. Friday’s café lunch is noon–1 PM, with a $5 suggested donation; call about reservations. The free-class invitation does not make lunch or personal services free.

The VNA bereavement group meets Tuesday, 1–2:30 PM, at Osterville Village Library. Contact Sarah Stevenson, 508-740-3979, for information and registration. Dads in Recovery meets Tuesday, 6–7 PM on Zoom, a free peer-support program; enrollment details are on the organizer’s page.

The Marstons Mills Library Wellness Series has its next session Thursday, October 8, 6 PM, at 2160 Main Street. Free; reserve through the library’s booking page. For another nearby outing, Sunday’s cloud walk at Fuller Farm starts at 10 AM.

Buried in Treasures begins Tuesday, October 13, 10:15 AM–12:15 PM at Osterville Village Library, 43 Wianno Avenue. This free, 16-week workshop offers support with acquiring, saving and clutter. Call 508-375-6676 for registration and information. It is the start of a series, so there is time to ask whether it is the right fit.

Before You Leave the House

An errand worth putting in the calendar: Barnstable’s household hazardous-waste collection is Saturday, October 10, 9 AM–noon, at the transfer station, 45 Flint Street, Marstons Mills. Check the county’s accepted-item and resident-eligibility rules before loading the car. Small businesses need preapproval.

Two cancellations: Wednesday’s The Last Place on Earth screening in Cotuit and Sunday’s Clam Crawl at Sandy Neck are cancelled. Film ticket holders can contact the Cotuit box office about reimbursement.

One change to cross off: Thursday’s Bee a Friend lecture at Meetinghouse Farm is not taking place October 8. Whelden says it will be rescheduled in spring.

Monday is a holiday. Centerville, Dennis Public Library, Sturgis and Yarmouth Town Libraries list closures on October 12. Whelden, West Dennis Library and Dennis Memorial Library also list holiday closures. Check any other venue’s holiday hours directly before relying on its usual Monday schedule.

Reserve the things with limited places before building the rest of the day around them. For outdoor events, use the organizer’s weather update. And if your Sunday involves both a concert and the fireworks, look at the clock: the Sarah Swain show runs across the fireworks start. Choose the evening you actually want.

Save this for the moment somebody says, “What shall we do?”
