There are weekends when you need to find something to do. This one needs a little sorting.
Whelden’s volunteers have turned the library over to the things that usually remain safely inside books. Cape Symphony’s strings are working with Hitchcock. For fresh air, Hyannis Open Streets gives Sunday afternoon to feet and bicycles, while Meetinghouse Farm has a walk with somebody who can tell you what the trees are.
Choose an evening first. Then leave enough room around it to have a weekend.
★ marks an editor’s pick. All times are Eastern Daylight Time. Book through the linked host pages; prices and seats can change. Where a fee is not stated, check the host rather than assume free admission.
Weather, as of Wednesday morning (National Weather Service): Friday is wet—showers from early morning into the night, with gusty south winds. Outdoor walks with a rain policy will likely be called off; check the host before setting out. Saturday clears after an early front but stays near 50°F with strong northwest gusts, possibly near 40 mph; dress for wind at the farm and backyard festivals. Sunday is sunny, in the mid-50s and calmer—good news for Open Streets and the afternoon walks.

🆓 The Best Free Thing: Hear What Someone Else Noticed
Sat, Oct 17 · 11 AM–12:30 PM · Sturgis Library, 3090 Main Street, Barnstable Village · Free; no registration
Writers from David and Heidi Gessner’s workshop share their new Cape-inspired work. Arrive curious, take a seat and hear how a familiar place changes when somebody else describes it. No signup to manage; the library is open to everyone for this reading.
If the reading sends you home wanting to write something yourself, the Edward Gorey House has a free, self-guided postcard-writing station, Scenes from Out-of-Doors, Friday through Sunday, 11 AM–4 PM, at 8 Strawberry Lane, Yarmouth Port. It is part of Barnstable Land Trust’s Write Out Cape Cod, running through October 25.
🎃 The Night the Library Stops Being Quiet
Sat, Oct 17 · 6–9 PM · Whelden, 2401 Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable
Book timed entry. Individual tickets are $15; advance groups of four or more are $10 each plus service fee, online only. Door admission is also $15, cash only, subject to space. Darkness, live actors, fog, strobes, obstacles and loud noises make this a scare attraction; parental discretion matters. The proceeds support the library.
Sat, Oct 17 · 7:30 PM; Sun, Oct 18 · 3 PM · Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis
The complete film plays while Cape Symphony performs the score live, conducted by Alyssa Wang. Reserve through the official page or the box office, 508-362-1111; the orchestra’s calendar blocks out about two hours. The matinee is a useful option if Saturday already has a ticket on the fridge.
Sat, Oct 17 · 7:30–10:30 PM · Cotuit Center for the Arts Mainstage, 4404 Falmouth Road · Ticketed
Burlesque, comedy and a visiting cast give Cotuit its more grown-up evening. The current headline says 13th Annual Striptacular; the old title embedded in the URL is not the program name. Check the booking page for prices and entry rules.
For the ink-inclined: Hotline Tattoo’s Halloween Flash Day puts Edward Gorey designs on offer Friday, noon–7 PM, at 64 Enterprise Road, Hyannis. Walk-ins only, first come, first served; tattoos are priced by size, and a raffle benefits the Gorey House.
🥨 Saturday Can Be Entirely Cheerful
Saturday is dry but cold and windy after an early-morning front. Wear a layer you can keep on.
Sat, Oct 17 · 10 AM–1 PM · 607 Main Street, West Dennis
Tastings and cranberry-garland making give the farm its theme. Ages 3+ need a wristband, sold on the farm’s Eventbrite page and currently listed at $13.39. Tasting stations, activities and vendor access are included; vendor goods, face painting and food specials cost extra. Refunds close seven days before the event. Ted Wyman is separately scheduled 1–4 PM.
Sat, Oct 17 · 2–5 PM · Cotuit Center for the Arts Backyard
Pretzels, sausage, stein holding and polka make a strong case for staying close to home. The Polka-tuit All Stars play 3–4 PM. Admission terms are not stated; food and drink are separate purchases to budget for.
Sat, Oct 17 · 3–6 PM · Cape Cod Museum of Art, 60 Hope Lane, Dennis · Ticketed
Brewery-and-bites voting, a stein-holding contest, raffles, a silent auction, bratwurst and live music give the fundraiser its afternoon. The museum and its ticket page agree on 3–6 PM. The price is posted only inside the ticket page’s image, so check it there or with the museum, 508-385-4477.
🚶 Give the Weekend a Walking Route
Sun, Oct 18 · Noon–4 PM · Main Street, Hyannis · Free activities
Walk, cycle and dress up if the household feels like it. Leave time to stop when you meet someone. Purchases are extra. Sunday’s forecast is sunny, so the October 25 rain date shouldn’t be needed, but the organizer notes events can change without notice. Hyannis Restaurant Week runs at the same time, October 15–21.
Fri, Oct 16 · 9:30–10:30 AM · Meet at the front door of JFK Hyannis Museum, 397 Main Street
Peggy Jablonski’s narrated route considers local history and social questions. $10 walk only; $24 with museum admission. Reserve; the group is limited to 26. The route has accessible sidewalks, rest stops and restroom access. Rain cancels, and Friday morning’s forecast is wet; check the museum before you go.
Town of Barnstable’s Fall Walking Weekend
The following details come from the current 2026 brochure, which lists no fees and requires registration only where noted below. Choose a route you can comfortably finish, and expect Friday’s rain to affect anything scheduled that day.
Day | Walk | Start / effort |
|---|---|---|
Sat 17 | 1 PM · Front of JFK Museum, 397 Main St · 2.5 miles, some sand; Doug Payson. | |
Sat 17 | 3 PM · Lot off Old Stage Rd, southbound side near the electrical transformer · 1.2 miles, fairly level, roots; David Gorrill. | |
Sun 18 | 3 PM · 321 Old Jail Lane trailhead · 2 miles, about 1.5 hours, gentle climbing; Lev Malakhoff. |
Two more walks sit in the brochure’s combined Friday–Saturday section: the Barnstable Village Loop (2:30 PM, Superior Court, 3195 Main Street; 2.5 miles, hills; Doug Payson, 508-737-7000) and The Woods of West Barnstable (10 AM, Crooked Cartway, parking about 0.3 mile in from Race Lane; 2.5 miles, about two hours). Check the brochure or the leader for the day before you go.
Two walks require registration. Friday’s Fall Migration Walk with ornithology educator Tommy Burgess is 4:30–6 PM at BLT Headquarters/Pogorelc Sanctuary, West Barnstable: free, an easy quarter-mile, a 15-person limit, binoculars recommended, and cancelled in rain or severe weather. With Friday’s forecast, check BLT before driving over. Saturday’s Ropes Field Wonder Walk is noon–1 PM in Cotuit, for ages 18 months to teens with an adult; each child keeps a notebook. Register through Cotuit Library, with 14 places at Wednesday’s check.
Sun, Oct 18 · 1 PM · Meetinghouse Farm, 2135 Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable · Free; open to all
Doug Payson leads the tree-identification walk, about a mile; meet at the grassy parking area. Allow 60–90 minutes, wear walking shoes and bring water; check for ticks afterward. The host page and town brochure agree on 1 PM, and Sunday should be sunny.
For a slower Saturday, Forest Medicine for Your Mind meets at the same farm 10:45 AM–noon. $25 per person; email [email protected] to register. No experience is needed for the guided outdoor meditation; dress for Saturday’s wind.

Galleries, and One Serious Making Project
Fiber Fusion and Friends and Martin Kelley’s Realism in Pigment and Pencil continue at Cotuit Center for the Arts through November 8. Posted gallery hours this week are Wednesday–Friday, 10 AM–4 PM; Saturday, noon–4 PM. These are exhibition visits, not opening-night receptions; check admission terms.
Down the road in Cotuit, the Cahoon Museum of American Art has its Ralph Cahoon, Invisible Threads and Rockwell Kent exhibitions on view through December 20. Check the museum for hours and admission.
At the Cultural Center, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth, Cultivate 2026 runs through October 20. She Spoke Up and Visual Echoes begin Tuesday, October 20; their shared opening reception is the following Friday, October 23, 5:30–7:30 PM, so do not plan a reception around this edition’s dates. The center is open Tuesday–Friday, 10 AM–5 PM, and Saturday, 10 AM–3 PM.
The Maritime Museum’s Plymouth Rock’r wooden rocking-boat workshop runs Friday–Sunday, 8 AM–5 PM each day, at 135 South Street, Hyannis. $850 per boat, materials included, for the whole three-day project; you must attend all three days, and it is limited to seven adults. Arrange a place with the museum; this is a course commitment, not a Saturday drop-in craft.
Before You Leave the House
Friday is a rain day. The JFK Museum walk and BLT’s migration walk both cancel in rain; check before setting out. Saturday is cold and gusty, even in sunshine.
Whelden’s haunted house uses timed tickets, and the library’s calendar lists it closed on Saturday, October 17, 9 AM–2 PM, for setup. Ordinary Saturday borrowing hours do not apply.
Waitlist only: Friday’s Lino Block Printing at South Yarmouth Library, 3–4:30 PM, and Thursday’s Cotuit Drop In and Read, 4:30–5 PM. Despite the second title, registration is required. Do not arrive expecting a place.
Registration closed: Cotuit’s Made with Love knitting fundraiser has an October 15 session, but it must be booked as a series. It is not an open $25 afternoon class.
Early voting begins Saturday. Statewide early voting for the November 3 election runs October 17–30, and every town must open on the October 17–18 weekend. Dennis’s session is Saturday, 9 AM–3 PM, in the Prue Conference Room at Town Hall, using the front entrance. Barnstable and Yarmouth voters should check their town clerk for local hours and locations. Yarmouth’s Accessible Voting Q&A is Friday, 10–11 AM, in the Town Hall Hearing Room, lower level, 1146 Route 28.
Use an outdoor event’s own weather update. Book the limited places first. Then leave a gap in the afternoon for the person you meet and weren’t expecting.
Save this for the moment someone asks what you are doing this weekend.
