A hundred dachshunds behind the courthouse.

Ten poets eliminating one another three rounds deep on Main Street.

Nearly a hundred makers on the harbor.

Seven planets inside the Barnstable Performing Arts Center.

If you only looked at the forecast, you could mistake this for a quiet week.

It is not.

The Mid Cape has one of those calendars that looks almost invented when you put the events next to one another: Broadway Wicked singers in Dennis; a 1869 river expedition in Cotuit; four climate storytellers inside the Old Village Store; an Edward Gorey story hour; hand-cranked ice cream in West Dennis; six Loire wines in Yarmouth Port; a Monday morning bird walk timed to the incoming tide.

The weather is the only unreliable character. Friday gets wet and windy. Saturday is the day most likely to make outdoor plans reconsider their life choices. Sunday still carries risk.

So use this the way the Weekender is meant to be used: keep it open. Every event name below goes to the organizer, venue, first-party calendar or operational ticket page. If the sky changes, the answer should be one tap away.

β˜… = the ones we'd build part of the day around.

πŸ—“οΈ Seven Days, No Dead Weight

πŸ†“ Six Hours, Nearly a Hundred Cape Businesses, Zero Admission

Sun, Sept. 27 Β· 11:00 AM–5:00 PM Β· Aselton Park, Hyannis Β· Free

Love Live Local runs these festivals three times a year, and the September edition is the one that lands when the Cape stops having to perform summer quite so hard.

Nearly 100 Cape artists, makers, farmers and small businesses spread along Hyannis Harbor. The important word is not β€œvendors.” It is Cape. These are businesses that normally live one studio, market stall, kitchen, workshop or website at a time, temporarily occupying the same waterfront.

There is music. There is food. There are drinks and kids' activities. You can go for an hour; you can also accidentally stay until four.

No parking is available inside Aselton Park. Nearby public lots are the practical move. Bring a chair or blanket if you need guaranteed seating. Shade is limited. Leashed dogs are allowed.

The event is advertised as rain or shine except in extreme weather.

On this particular Sunday, the live festival page is part of the plan.

πŸ’΅ Ten Dollars, Zero Dollars, and the Useful End of the Price List

The Week You Can Leave the House Without Buying a $50 Ticket

A running list for anyone keeping score.

Free; donations appreciated: Autumn at the Manse and Ice Cream Saturday.

Ten-dollar territory: Full Volume Poetry Slam is $10 plus a quarter service fee. Tai Chi Chih on the Lawn is $10 Friday morning, weather permitting.

And Dunn & Sons advertises free Saturday tastings from noon to four β€” separate from the $55 Loire class that begins at five.

Free does not mean empty. Small rooms fill. Registration still matters where the organizer says it does.

🎢 Four Nights, Four Rooms, and One Orchestra Going to Space

Sat, Sept. 26 Β· 4 PM Β· Sun, Sept. 27 Β· 3 PM Β· Barnstable Performing Arts Center, Hyannis

Alyssa Wang opens her first full Cape Symphony season with Saariaho's Asteroid 4179: Toutatis, then Nathan Olson takes Prokofiev's first violin concerto, then Holst gets the second half.

Saariaho chose an asteroid with an irregular rotation so strange the stars would appear never to follow the same path twice. Prokofiev completed his concerto in 1917. Holst turns the solar system into personality: Mars the bringer of war, Jupiter the bringer of jollity, Neptune disappearing into distance.

Two hours. One intermission. A program talk an hour before each performance.

Fri, Sept. 25 Β· 7:30–9:30 PM Β· Cultural Center of Cape Cod, South Yarmouth Β· $35 / $30 members

Pate works across jazz, pop and R&B; here he joins Fred Boyle, Ron Ormsby and Bart Weisman in the Great Hall.

Friday night has enough competition that this one benefits from being easy to understand: sit down, listen, no costume, no concept, just a strong singer with a working trio in one of South Yarmouth's best rooms.

Hyannis Has a Four-Night Run of Its Own

Vanessa Collier plays Neptune's Thursday. Sophistafunk + Mighty Ceej & DJ XP take Friday. Fleetwood Heart gets Saturday. Ayla Brown Band closes Sunday.

A few blocks away, The Auld Triangle has karaoke Thursday, Derek Dibbern Friday, The Detours Saturday and the Irish Seisiun Tuesday.

Saturday afternoon, Love Farms Harvest Festival: Apple Week keeps music on the back lawn from 1–4 after its 10–1 festival block.

No need to write β€œlive music available.” The week has actual choices.

🎭 Two Witches, Ten Explorers, Five Films

The Indoor Weekend Is Better Than the Backup Plan Usually Is

Thu–Sat Β· 7:30 PM Β· Sun Β· 2 PM Β· Cotuit Center for the Arts

The year is 1869. John Wesley Powell is one-armed, ambitious and heading down a river that has no obligation to cooperate.

The crew meets rapids, hunger, clashing personalities and the central question of the play: when does pressing forward become indistinguishable from refusing to admit you are in trouble?

Cotuit runs it four times this week. That flexibility is worth something when the weather is not.

Fri & Sat Β· 7:30 PM Β· Sun Β· 2 PM Β· Cape Playhouse, Dennis

A Glinda and Elphaba from Broadway's Wicked bring the voices to Dennis without bringing the full Broadway machine with them.

The Cape Playhouse describes it as diva showstoppers, songs from Wicked, musical-theater favorites and the chemistry between two performers who know what happens when one singer gets the bubble and the other gets the broom.

Three performances. Friday and Saturday night; Sunday matinee.

Thu Β· 6–9 PM Β· Hyannis Arts Hall Β· $35 GA / $100 contributor

Five short documentaries connect centenarian swimming, commercial lobstering, kayaking, cold water and local pond conservation.

The gathering starts at six. Films run seven to nine.

Dennis

The exact daily schedule matters more than a static weekly list, especially this weekend. The current Sep. 23–29 program includes National Theatre Live and the cinema's regular film slate.

Click the live schedule for the day you actually plan to go.

Thu Β· opening reception 4–6 PM Β· Cultural Center of Cape Cod, South Yarmouth Β· Free

The opening is Thursday; the exhibition continues through October 20.

Hyannis waterfront

Twelve shanties across Bismore Park and Harbor Overlook keep artists on the waterfront through the season. In good weather, wander them. In bad weather, click first.

πŸ›οΈ Saturday, Dennis Opens Two Doors Into the Past

One Has a Schoolhouse. The Other Has Hand-Cranked Ice Cream.

Sat, Sept. 26 Β· 1–4 PM Β· Josiah Dennis Manse Museum, Dennis Village Β· Free; donations appreciated

The house belonged to the first minister of Dennis β€” the man the town was named after.

The Dennis Historical Society opens the 18th-century saltbox for its final September Saturday with the West Schoolhouse next door, gardens, early-town artifacts and a fall harvest from the grounds.

This is not β€œhistory” as a panel on a wall. You are standing in the house attached to the town's name.

Sat, Sept. 26 Β· 2–5 PM Β· Jericho Historical Center, West Dennis Β· Free; donations appreciated

Across town, the Captain Baker House and barn open with 19th-century furnishings, local and farming exhibits β€” and homemade hand-churned ice cream.

If you ever wonder why a hyperlocal calendar should bother carrying something this small, this is the answer.

You will remember the hand-cranked ice cream longer than you remember the fifteenth generic fall festival listing.

Captain Bangs Hallet House, Yarmouth Port

The 2026 seasonal exhibit sits inside an 1840 sea captain's house. The museum's current visitor information lists docent-led tours Thursday through Saturday, hourly from 11 AM, with the last tour beginning at two; advance reservations are encouraged because groups are capped.

Mon, Sept. 28 Β· 7–8:30 PM Β· Olde Colonial Courthouse, Barnstable Village

Mary Woodward uses John Singleton Copley's portraits to get at Revolutionary-era people β€” faces before abstractions, individuals before slogans.

The setting helps. It is easier to listen to an old Cape story inside a room that looks prepared to hear testimony.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ The Kids Get Music, Mud, Gorey, Apples, LEGO β€” and the Dogs

This Is Not a β€œColoring Table in the Corner” Week

Intergenerational Music & Movement Β· Thu Β· 10–11 AM Β· Dennis Center for Active Living, South Dennis Β· Free with registration. Children, caregivers and seniors sing, move and make music in the same group.

Little Naturalist Β· Thu Β· 2–3 PM Β· Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Barnstable Β· Free with registration. Outdoor exploration with a naturalist guide; every week uses a different nature topic.

Edward Gorey House Story Hour Β· Thu Β· 2–3 PM Β· Yarmouth Port Β· Free. No reservation. First-come seating. Children need an accompanying adult.

Porchlight Night Tales Β· Thu Β· 6–8 PM Β· Belonging Books, Hyannis. The new storytelling series begins by handing the microphone to community elders for firsthand stories and local lore. Better for older kids who can sit with a story.

At Hyannis Public Library, Story Time and Play runs Friday at 11; Fantastic Fall Saturday at 10:30; Drop-In LEGO Club Saturday at 2.

At Dennis Public Library, the live calendar carries Play, Storytime and Craft Thursday, Toy Story 5 Saturday, then Story & Project Tuesday.

Love Farms Harvest Festival: Apple Week puts tastings, activities, farm tours and vendors into Saturday morning in Dennis, then music 1–4.

And Cape Cod Doxie Day is free from noon to three Saturday, which means at some point you may have to explain why the family is doing something other than watching dachshunds race behind the courthouse.

🌿 The Weather Gets a Vote. It Does Not Get the Whole Ballot.

Shorebirds Monday. Everything Else, Check Before You Leave.

Mon, Sept. 28 Β· 8:00–9:30 AM Β· Chapin Beach, Dennis

The incoming tide is part of the event.

During migration, the shorebirds move with the waterline. The group follows them over rocky shoreline where ankle-deep water is possible. Dennis Conservation Land Trust recommends waterproof shoes or rubber boots and binoculars if you have them.

This is the corrected date from the live organizer page: Monday the 28th, not Friday.

The rest of the outdoor board: Osterville Farmers' Market Friday, Tai Chi Chih on the Lawn Friday, Love Farms Harvest Festival: Apple Week Saturday, Cape Cod Doxie Day Saturday, Full Moon Market & Music Saturday, Love Local Fest Sunday and the HyARTS Artist Shanties through the week.

Sturgis gives you one useful piece of certainty: Full Moon Market & Music moves indoors in rain.

Barnstable Land Trust gives you another: Tiny Trekkers is canceled.

For the rest, click before you go.

🍎 Six Loire Wines, One Apple Farm, and Monday Tacos

The Food Section Finally Looks Like a Food Section

Sat, Sept. 26 Β· 5–6 PM Β· Dunn & Sons Wine, Yarmouth Port Β· $55

Six wines in one hour, running through a region that can put sparkling wine, dry whites, reds and sweet wines under the same long geographical roof.

The class covers regions, styles, producers and pairing, then gives participants a purchase discount afterward.

If the class price is not the plan, Dunn & Sons also advertises free tastings every Saturday from noon to four.

Sat Β· 10 AM–1 PM festival; live music 1–4 PM Β· Dennis

Apple week means food and beverage tastings, farm activities, vendors, tours and a caramel-apple level of commitment to the theme.

Sat Β· 3–5 PM Β· Sturgis Library, Barnstable Village

Amalia Ververis plays. Food vendors include Compass Rose Cafe, Fizzy Potions and Wilde Flour Bakery. Local makers fill the rest of the grounds.

And if it rains, Sturgis moves the merriment inside.

Sat Β· starts 3 PM Β· Cape Cod Beer, Hyannis Β· Free

Dachtoberfest, live music, food trucks, families, dogs.

Sun Β· 11 AM–5 PM Β· Aselton Park, Hyannis Β· Free

Food and drinks sit around nearly 100 Cape makers and businesses. This one can replace lunch if you let it.

Mon Β· 4–7 PM Β· Cultural Center of Cape Cod, South Yarmouth Β· $11–$30

Chef Nyanyika Banda's September menu is taco-forward, counter-service, and built for exactly the kind of Monday when cooking at home has lost the argument.

✍️ Stories Told Out Loud, Written Down, or Pulled From Memory

This Week's Best Rooms Are Full of People Explaining Something

Thu, Sept. 24 Β· 6–8 PM Β· Belonging Books, Hyannis

This is the first night of a new series from Tamora Israel, Ascending Phoenix Productions and Belonging Books.

The format is deliberately small: firsthand stories, real-life experiences and local lore, each gathering built around a new theme.

For the first one, the microphone goes to community elders.

That makes Thursday's Hyannis choice unusually good. Women & Water is also happening at six. One room uses short documentary film. The other uses memory.

Fri, Sept. 25 Β· Old Village Store, West Barnstable

Cape locals Julia Cumes and Meera Subramanian join Boston-based Joanna Davidson and Jaelyn Carr for Moth-style stories about living inside a changed climate.

This is a Cape redux of a spring program held at WBUR's CitySpace. The source material ranges from floodwaters in New Orleans to an elephant in India β€” survival, memory, identity, what gets lost and what people decide to carry forward.

One important source conflict remains: Barnstable Land Trust's main calendar currently shows 5:30–6:30 PM, while its exact event page shows 5–6 PM. Use the live exact event page before leaving rather than letting us manufacture certainty where the organizer has two current times online.

Sat Β· 6:30–9:30 PM Β· Belonging Books Β· $10.25

Sixteen weeks of workshops end in a public three-round slam.

That is a story arc, not just an event listing.

Sat Β· 10–11 AM Β· Cotuit Library Β· Free

Foy is a novelist, essayist, professor and former mariner. The book's Cape setting makes Saturday morning a particularly local way into the work.

Tue Β· 4–5:30 PM Β· The Cordial Eye, Hyannis Β· $120 for four-week series Β· age 16+

A beginner playwriting course whose promise is unusually concrete: learn the mechanics of writing for the stage, then put the work in front of an audience.

πŸ’ͺ The Quiet Rooms: Movement, Grief, Sound, and Family

Not Every Good Event Needs an Audience

Fall Grief Circle Β· Thu Β· 5:30–7 PM Β· Cape Wellness Collaborative, South Yarmouth Β· RSVP.

Tai Chi Chih on the Lawn Β· Fri Β· 9–10 AM Β· Osterville Village Library Β· $10 Β· weather-sensitive.

Little Scientists Β· Mon Β· 10–11 AM Β· Meetinghouse Farm, West Barnstable Β· Free with registration.

A Play on Words Β· Tue Β· 4–5:30 PM Β· The Cordial Eye.

Zumba on the Hyannis Village Green Β· Tue Β· 5:30–6:30 PM Β· Free Β· no rain date.

September Meditation & Sound Bath Β· Tue Β· 5:30–6:45 PM Β· Cape Wellness Collaborative Β· $20.

Raising Healthy Families Β· Tue Β· 5:30–7:30 PM Β· Dennis Public Library.

Sometimes the useful event is the one that does not need a headline. It just needs the right person to know it exists.

πŸ—“οΈ The Things That Keep Happening While Everyone Else Chases Saturday

Libraries, Shanties, Movies, and the Rooms That Make a Week Feel Lived In

HyARTS Artist Shanties stay on the Hyannis waterfront at Bismore Park and Harbor Overlook.

Captain Bangs Hallet House / Yarmouth in Revolution continues in Yarmouth Port during the museum's current tour schedule.

Hyannis Public Library carries its current library-event calendar through the week, including Friday and Saturday family programming.

Dennis Public Library carries its current week of story, movie and family programming.

The Auld Triangle has its Thursday-through-Tuesday live-music rhythm.

Neptune's has four consecutive programmed nights Thursday through Sunday.

Cape Cinema keeps the easiest rainy-day pivot on the board: use the current showtime page for the day you actually go.

⏰ One Deadline That Is Not Entertainment

Friday at 11:59 PM Is Still Friday

Dennis residents who want to vote at the October 6 Special Town Meeting should use the Town of Dennis Town Meeting page now.

The town lists the registration deadline as Friday, September 25 β€” 5 PM in person and 11:59 PM online.

That is exactly the sort of deadline people remember after breakfast on Saturday.

🚫 The Events We Killed So You Don't Have To

A Good Calendar Is Also a List of Things That Did Not Survive Verification

Tiny Trekkers is organizer-confirmed canceled for Sunday due to weather.

Thursday Night Chapters is still being rolled forward by an aggregator even though its own description says the series ended September 3. Out.

The same calendar rolls Outside Straight Lines II into late September despite a description that dates the exhibition May 23–June 21. Out.

A third-party calendar still surfaces an HSOY Sunday historic-reservation walk, but the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth's current events page no longer supports that Sep. 27 occurrence cleanly. Out.

A Dennis Chamber calendar surfaced a Paul O'Dette lute performance on Sep. 26. The actual performance is at the Arts Empowering Life Performing Arts Center in Brewster. That is Lower Cape, not Mid Cape. Out.

An earlier pass put Chapin Beach Birding on Friday. The current organizer page says Monday. Corrected.

And Yarmouth library searches still like to hand you Yarmouth, Maine if you are not paying attention.

More listings is not the goal.

Fewer dead ends is.

πŸ“£ Know Something We Missed?

Got an event in Barnstable, Dennis or Yarmouth that belongs here?

Send it.

We read everything. We verify before we publish. We do not run paid placements.

The Close

This Is Why You Keep the Weekender Open

A new symphony season begins with an asteroid.

A twelve-year-old Barnstable tradition measures dachshunds for length.

A room on Main Street turns sixteen weeks of poetry practice into three elimination rounds.

A house named for Dennis's first minister opens for the harvest while another house across town hand-cranks ice cream.

Four people bring stories once told at WBUR back to an old village store.

A new Hyannis storytelling series gives its first microphone to the people who have been here long enough to remember what changed.

Nearly a hundred small Cape businesses get six hours on the harbor.

And Monday morning, after the weekend has spent two days arguing with the weather, the shorebirds move up Chapin Beach with the incoming tide.

That is the week.

You do not have to do all of it.

Pick the one you would hate to hear about afterward.

Then send this to the person who would hate to hear about it afterward too.

Celebrate Mid Cape is for people who know the difference between a good weekend and a wasted one.

Every event here is earned. We don't sell placements.

See you back here Wednesday.
