THE MID CAPE WEEKENDER · NOV. 5 – 10, 2026 · BARNSTABLE · YARMOUTH · DENNIS

Thursday at 7:30 PM, three Mid Cape stages raise a curtain at the same moment. Barnstable Comedy Club opens Curtains, a backstage murder mystery with songs. The college's theater opens Love/Sick in West Barnstable. And Eventide opens Songs for a New World on Route 6A in Dennis.

Saturday turns toward remembering. Flags go up at Johnny Kelley Park in South Dennis for the Field of Honor, ahead of Veterans Day. At 5 PM, The Cordial Eye in Hyannis builds a community ofrenda and opens a show for local artists who have died. On Sunday afternoon in Dennis, a pianist plays a 1935 college recital: Bach, then Mozart, then Brahms.

The rest of the week is the quiet kind. Three poets in a Barnstable church. A talk on the fire that burned 65 acres of Boston, two days before its anniversary. Edward Hopper's Cape, on a Tuesday night at Sturgis.

Choose the one that feels worth leaving the house for. Then see what else is happening nearby.

★ marks an editor's pick. All times are Eastern Standard Time. Dates and prices were checked against organizer pages Thursday morning, November 5, where marked; seats and tickets can change. Unless admission is explicitly listed as free, check the host rather than assume.

🎭 Three Curtains, One Thursday

A murder backstage, love going sideways and a ship leaving in 1492

Kander and Ebb's whodunit, where the corpse is the leading lady.

🏷️ Best for: anyone who loves a backstage story · Cost: $35; seniors $33 · Runs: four weekends

Thu–Sat, Nov 5–7 · 7:30 PM; Sun, Nov 8 · 2:30 PM · Village Hall, 3171 Main Street, Barnstable Village

The team behind Cabaret and Chicago wrote this one about a musical in trouble: a 1959 Boston tryout, a star who dies on opening night, and a police detective who would rather be fixing the second act than solving the case.

The club runs it on weekends through Nov. 22. Book through the club's ticket link; questions go to 508-362-6333.

Jason Robert Brown's first musical, which is really a set of songs about one moment of choosing.

🏷️ Best for: people who like their musicals without a plot to follow · Cost: $35 · Runs: through Nov. 15

Thu–Sat, Nov 5–7 · 7:30 PM; Sun, Nov 8 · 2 PM · Eventide Theatre Company, 713 Main Street (Route 6A), Dennis

The songs jump from a Spanish ship in 1492 to a ledge high above Fifth Avenue. A young man sees basketball as his way out. A woman bets her dreams on marrying rich. Denise Page directs, with Jeffrey Cutts as musical director.

Sit close enough to see faces. In a show built on single songs, that's where it happens.

Thu–Fri, Nov 5–6 · 7:30 PM; Sat, Nov 7 · 2 PM and 7:30 PM · Cape Cod Community College, 2240 Iyannough Road, West Barnstable · from $5

John Cariani, who wrote Almost, Maine, built this one from nine short plays about love going sideways. The college's ticket page shows some performances with a waitlist button; check your night before you count on a seat.

🕯️ A Weekend for Remembering

An ofrenda, a field of flags and a film about the men who flew anyway

A party with a dance floor, a piñata, and a wall of names.

🏷️ Best for: anyone who has lost someone who made things · Cost: $50 · Note: the $35 item is an ofrenda dedication, not a ticket

Sat, Nov 7 · 5 PM · The Cordial Eye, 438 Main Street, Hyannis

The Cordial Eye runs art programs and community space out of Main Street. Saturday it builds a community ofrenda, the altar tradition of Día de Muertos, naming people who have died. A $35 donation adds a loved one's name to it.

The evening opens Wish You Were Here, an exhibition honoring local artists who have passed. Then there's food, music, an open dance floor and a piñata with prizes. The organizer asks one thing: traditional Día de Muertos dress and makeup aren't a Halloween costume. Proceeds support the Cordial Eye's programs.

Opens Sat, Nov 7 · from 9 AM · Johnny Kelley Park, 180 Old Bass River Road, South Dennis · Free to visit

Rows of flags go up honoring veterans and loved ones, and stay up through Thursday, Nov. 12, the day after Veterans Day. Daily viewing hours can vary; check the chamber listing. Go once on a weekday morning, when it's only you and the wind in the flags.

Tue, Nov 10 · 1–3 PM · Centerville Public Library, 585 Main Street · No fee listed; RSVP

The day before Veterans Day, the library screens the HBO film about the first Black fighter pilots in the Army Air Corps, with popcorn and refreshments. RSVP through the event page.

🎶 Music Worth Getting Off Your Couch For

Joni, a 1935 recital and two free Friday nights

A Sarah Lawrence student's program, played in the gallery hung with her art.

🏷️ Best for: a Sunday with a parent · Cost: $35; members $28, plus small fees · Includes: museum admission

Sun, Nov 8 · 4–5 PM · Hunter Gallery, Cape Cod Museum of Art, 60 Hope Lane, Dennis

In 1935, Mary Crocker Fassett was a piano student at Sarah Lawrence College. Her recital in Bates Hall opened with Bach's Prelude and Fugue, which a reviewer called "true Bach interpretation," then a Mozart sonata, and after intermission, a Brahms intermezzo. She also made art, and the museum is showing it now.

Ana Glig, a Georgian-American pianist who has played with the Cape Symphony, recreates that program. The concert ends after dark. Walk the exhibition first, while there's light in the windows.

Fri, Nov 6 · 7:30–9:30 PM · Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth · $30; members $25

Vocalist Teresa Lorenço leads a band through the whole arc, from the early folk songs through the jazz years. The Center is aiming for an intimate night, not an impersonation.

🏛️ Talks, Books & Local Knowledge

A burning city, three poets and Hopper's light

Two days before the anniversary of the night downtown Boston burned.

🏷️ Best for: anyone who commutes past the Financial District in their head · Cost: free · Book ahead: yes

Sat, Nov 7 · 1–2 PM · Main Meeting Room, Osterville Village Library, 43 Wianno Avenue

The fire started on the evening of Nov. 9, 1872, near Summer and Washington streets, and ran toward the harbor wharves. By the library's count it took 65 acres, 776 buildings and an estimated 20 lives, and caused more than $73 million in damage. Boston rewrote its building rules afterward and hired a city architect to oversee construction.

Sammarco has written dozens of books on Boston history. Register with Amy Wolfe at 508-428-5757 or [email protected].

Sat, Nov 7 · 2–4 PM · St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 3055 Main Street, Barnstable Village · Free

Jennifer M. Phillips, Janet Edmonds and Scott Withiam read on a November afternoon in one of 6A's old churches. The club's page lists the address as 3066; the church is at 3055.

Tue, Nov 10 · 5:30–6:30 PM · Sturgis Library, 3090 Main Street, Barnstable Village · Free; RSVP required

Bob Seay walks through the painter's Cape years, picture by picture. Hopper spent decades of summers in Truro; you'll leave looking at the light on your own street differently. RSVP through the library's calendar.

Sat, Nov 7 · 11 AM–noon · Cape Cod Museum of Art, 60 Hope Lane, Dennis · With museum admission: $15, seniors $12, 21 and under and members free

Artist Peter Michael Martin shows his white-line prints made on recycled Beetle Cat sailcloth, picturing Cape Verdean workers harvesting cranberries. Then the museum screens Cape Verdean Cranberry: The Fernandes Story (2025), Antonio and Joe Damoura's film about one family and the bogs of southeastern Massachusetts.

💪 Weekdays, Wellness & Learning

Quieter hours, worth leaving the house for

🚗 Before You Head Out

Sold out, full, online-only and one wrong address

Sold out: Both sessions of Cotuit Center's Play It Forward mahjong fundraiser on Saturday. The box office keeps a waitlist.

Full: Sturgis Library's Saturday Autumn Celebration & Tiny Watercolor Session.

Online only: Centerville's Yoga with Pam is on Zoom in November. Don't drive to the library for it.

The poetry reading: St. Mary's is at 3055 Main Street, Barnstable Village, not 3066 as the club's page says.

Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, the day after this edition ends. Expect libraries and town offices to keep holiday hours; the Field of Honor stays up through Thursday.

Registration: Many library and studio listings here were carried over from earlier research and weren't rechecked Thursday. If a program says "register," call first. For capacity-limited events, a posted date does not guarantee a seat.

⚓ One Last Thing

From the Celebrate Mid Cape crew

This is the week the Mid Cape stops performing for visitors and starts performing for itself. Three community stages open the same night. A storefront in Hyannis sets a place for artists it lost. A field in South Dennis fills with flags for people most of us never met.

None of it is big. All of it is ours. Sunset is before 4:30 now, so the evenings belong to whoever shows up.

Send this to someone who still thinks November on the Cape is closed.

See you next week.
