SOUTH YARMOUTH · THE LONG WAY TO THE PEDIATRICIAN
Exit 75. Union Street. Station Avenue. The Stop & Shop on your left.
Those are Bass River Pediatric Associates' own directions, and if you live in South Yarmouth you stopped needing them years ago. They end at 237 Station Avenue, across from the Dennis-Yarmouth High School exit. You know that stretch.
Now start the same trip somewhere else. The Provincetown Independent reported Oct. 28 that some Outer Cape parents drive to Yarmouth, "home to a cluster of pediatric practices," on a trip Lauren Hakimi's story puts at "roughly an hour from Truro." Traffic and the house you start from will move that number. One Truro parent she interviewed goes to Bass River. Another goes to Star and Fox Pediatrics, listed at 257 Station Avenue.
Roughly an hour each way is two hours in the car before anybody has been weighed. It's a morning of work, or an afternoon of school, for an ear that may turn out to be fine. So walk it backward, from the far end, and watch what the road passes.
A pediatrics page that names no pediatrician
Roughly 1,645 children under 18 live in the Outer Cape towns, by the 2024 American Community Survey figure the Independent cited.
Heading up-Cape from Truro, you reach Outer Cape Health Services at 3130 Route 6 in Wellfleet. Its pediatrics page promises care from the time children "are newborns through adulthood," delivered by "OCHS care teams." It doesn't name a clinician.
The Independent did the count as of October: three family-medicine doctors, 12 physician assistants or nurse practitioners, and "two pediatricians who divide their time between pediatric care and other responsibilities." Pediatrician Paul Geltman, who became deputy CEO in October, told the paper he intended to start seeing patients on a limited basis within 6 to 12 weeks, "probably something like one day a week."
Some families stay put, and happily. One Truro parent told the paper she's pleased with a family-medicine doctor in Wellfleet. CEO Damian Archer, a family-medicine doctor himself, said there's "a misunderstanding by the public that if you don't see a pediatrician, you're not getting the same high-quality care." Barry Zuckerman of Wellfleet, a former chair of pediatrics at Boston Medical Center, told the paper that "pediatricians have more training," particularly in the needs of very young children. He also said family physicians, "by and large, who are caring, can do a good job taking care of most children."
That argument belongs to the doctors and the parents. We're just reading the road signs.
An Orleans pediatrician, if it's Thursday
Keep going to the Orleans rotary, where the road turns back into a highway.
"There's one important caveat," the Independent wrote: "Dr. Jacqueline Sloan works in Orleans only on Thursdays." That's the Oct. 28 report, and we didn't recheck her current week. Cape Cod Healthcare's directory lists her at Orleans Primary Care and at Seaside Pediatrics, 150 Ansel Hallet Road in West Yarmouth, where the paper says she spends the rest of her week. It's a tidy picture of the Cape's medical geography: the same doctor, and the day of the week decides how far you drive.
Orleans is in motion this month, too. Outer Cape Health's letter to patients put Harwich Port's final day at Oct. 23 and says, "We will be in the Orleans Clinic in November." Its notice gives no opening day.
Yarmouth has over twice the Outer Cape's kids
Past the rotary, the road runs back toward the numbers you live with. Citing the Census Bureau, the Independent wrote that there are "more than twice as many people under age 18 in Yarmouth alone than on the whole Outer Cape."
Put the offices next to that. Bass River has four pediatricians at one address, by its office manager's count to the paper, plus nurse practitioners on its staff page. Star and Fox is on the same street. Seaside is in West Yarmouth. Briarpatch Pediatrics is in Yarmouth Port.
Whatever you think of South Yarmouth on a wet Tuesday, from Truro it's where the pediatricians are.
"Maybe 15 or 20 percent" from off-Cape
Then the map turns over. Truro isn't the only far end of it.
Rich Fromm, Bass River's office manager, told the Independent the Outer Cape isn't the only source of parents who drive long distances. "Maybe 15 or 20 percent of our patients come from off-Cape to our office, in which case we want to encourage them to find care closer to where they are."
That's his estimate, and we found no published share for the Outer Cape alone. So the same waiting room may be holding a family from Truro and a family from the other side of the canal, each a long way from home, and you, who came from down the road. Summer traffic can cause those long-distance patients to miss appointments, he told the paper, and the practice's scheduling page lists a $25 fee for a visit missed without 24 hours' notice.
The same page, which carries no date, has a line that matters to anyone new in South Yarmouth, too: "Now accepting first newborns only and siblings of established patients." Call before you count on it either way.
The drive back to Truro is also roughly an hour.
Sunday's pediatrician is in Yarmouth Port
From the practice's own undated page, as it read Nov. 5. That's not confirmation of current policy, so call the office first.
Who can sign on. "First newborns only and siblings of established patients," per the scheduling page. Bass River Pediatric Associates, 237 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, 508-394-2116.
Weekdays and Saturday mornings. Monday through Friday, 8 AM–5 PM. Saturday sick visits and well-child exams by appointment, 8 AM–noon.
Sundays. The page says Briarpatch Pediatrics in Yarmouth Port provides coverage for Bass River patients, 508-362-5727. Briarpatch's own FAQ says it's open Sundays and shares Saturday cross-coverage with Bass River.
The $25 line. The page says the fee applies if you don't give 24 hours' notice of a cancellation.
What this isn't. A recommendation. We haven't compared these practices, and nothing here is medical advice.
Station Avenue has a Nov. 16 date, too
Three more pieces from this same stretch of Yarmouth: a road, a river and a rule.
ROUTE 6A · ROUTE 28
Ask how someone gets from Yarmouth to Dennis and you find out which side they're on.
YARMOUTH · BASS RIVER
The town has a plan for its oyster shells, and it ends underwater.
YARMOUTH · TOWN MEETING
Short-term rentals are the subject, Nov. 30 is the deadline, and Town Meeting holds the extension.
