Fifteen mosquitoes went into a trap in Cotuit on July 21.

That's the whole event. Fifteen insects, one collection, one sample bottle sent off to a state lab like a hundred other sample bottles from a hundred other Massachusetts towns.

It came back positive for West Nile virus.

What Actually Happened

The mosquitoes were identified as Culex pipiens/restuans — the group most closely associated with West Nile transmission in this part of the country. On July 23 the state lab's result reached the town, and Barnstable's public health division put out word: crews would be out "treating catch basins as well as containers holding water in areas near the positive sample."

That treatment is the routine surveillance-and-larval-control response to a positive sample. It is not evidence that anyone got sick, and it is not an emergency. It is the system doing the thing the system exists to do.

It Wasn't Only Cotuit

A sample collected the same day near Sider's Pond in Falmouth also came back positive. Then a second Falmouth sample, collected July 28 at the same location, came back positive as well — and the state raised Falmouth to moderate risk.

Barnstable has since been raised to moderate too. As of the state's August 5 update, Massachusetts had logged 77 West Nile–positive mosquito samples — and, importantly, zero human cases, zero animal cases, and no EEE activity anywhere in the state. Seventeen communities sit at moderate risk for West Nile; Barnstable, Falmouth and Mashpee are three of them.

So: not one detection. A small cluster, on this side of the canal, in the space of about a week.

None of which means a local human case has occurred. It means the virus is circulating in the bird-and-mosquito cycle close enough to your yard that the ordinary precautions are worth doing now rather than in September.

The Part Most People Get Backwards

Here is the intuition almost everyone on the Cape is running on this summer: it's been bone dry, there's no standing water anywhere, so there must be fewer mosquitoes.

It's half right. Unfortunately it's the wrong half.

The mosquitoes that ruin a July cookout largely come out of rainwater — flooded woodland pools, filled buckets, wet ground, marsh. A dry summer takes a lot of that away, and their numbers do fall. You've probably noticed. Fewer bites at the grill.

But Culex mosquitoes work a different room.

They exploit stagnant, organically enriched water — the dark, still, nutrient-thick stuff that collects in catch basins, drainage structures, and forgotten artificial containers, including water left behind after a rain. Not the fresh puddle. The old one. The one that's had weeks to turn into soup.

Which is precisely why the first move after a positive sample is a crew going down the street lifting grates. Catch basins are important Culex habitat in suburban neighborhoods — not the only habitat, but a reliable one, and one that a dry August doesn't necessarily clear out.

There's a proposed mechanism on the bird side too: as ponds shrink and puddles vanish, birds and mosquitoes may concentrate around whatever water is left, increasing contact within the transmission cycle. That's a hypothesis about how drought could push infection rates up. It is not a finding about what happened in Cotuit.

What the Science Actually Says — And What It Doesn't

A 2025 study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B"The paradoxical impact of drought on West Nile virus risk" — analyzed more than 500,000 mosquito-trap nights and found exactly this apparent contradiction: "while drought decreases mosquito abundances, it paradoxically increases West Nile virus infection rates." The magnitude, the authors wrote, "depends critically on mosquito species."

Fewer mosquitoes. Higher infection rates in particular ones. No clean arithmetic.

The important asterisk: that data came from a single California county — Kern County, in the southern Central Valley, 2010 to 2023. It offers a plausible mechanism. It does not establish what is happening on Cape Cod in 2026, and it does not explain the Cotuit sample.

The local numbers refuse to be tidy either. Barnstable County's first West Nile–positive sample in 2025 turned up in late June. This year's came weeks later, in a drier season. But the timing of a first positive trap depends on trap placement, testing cadence, species mix, weather, sampling intensity, and plain luck as much as on ecology — so year-over-year dates are a poor drought thermometer.

Whatever drought is doing here, it isn't keeping a calendar.

Since 1928

What does keep a calendar is the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project, organized in 1928 — "the first organized mosquito control project in the State of Massachusetts," started with a countywide fundraising drive by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, and based today in Yarmouth Port.

It has been running some version of this work for close to a century: surveillance traps around the county, catches sent to the state lab, field crews doing larval control, catch basins treated with targeted bacterial larvicides that kill mosquito larvae and leave the rest of the drain alone.

Nobody thinks about them until a sample comes back positive. Then it turns out there's been a countywide early-warning system quietly running since Calvin Coolidge was president.

Ten Minutes in Your Own Yard

The useful response at home is unglamorous and takes about as long as watering the pots.

Walk the property and dump anything holding water. The saucer under the planter. The tarp over the boat. The wheelbarrow. The kids' toys. The lid of the recycling bin. The low spot in the gutter.

Change the birdbath water regularly — empty it, scrub it, refill it — so nothing has time to complete an aquatic life cycle in there.

Fix the screens.

Use an EPA-registered repellent according to the label: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Permethrin goes on clothing and gear — the CDC's instruction is blunt: "Do not use permethrin products directly on skin."

Wear long sleeves and pants during evening and overnight hours when it's practical. That's when Culex is most active — though it isn't a guarantee of zero daytime risk.

The Line Worth Repeating

The health division's own framing is the reason this is worth your attention at all, and it deserves to be quoted straight: "While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection."

That's a meaningful share of the people reading this. It's a meaningful share of the people in line at the market on Friday.

The lesson from Cotuit is not that mosquitoes are everywhere or that a dry summer guarantees an outbreak. It's smaller and more useful than that.

The brown lawn is easy to see. The small, stagnant places that actually matter to mosquito control usually aren't.
