A banner runs near the top of a West Dennis restaurant's homepage this week, and it's five words long: Closing for Retirement November 1.

Under it, Sundancer's still lists the basics. The address, 116 Main St. on Route 28, on the Bass River. The phone number. Whole boiled lobster, Chatham steamers and a lobster roll the site calls "the Cape's largest." And over a drone shot of the dock, a heading: "Walk Up, Drive Up, or Tie Up."

Read the page top to bottom as a ledger, line by line, and the numbers tell you how the last posted weekend on the water is set to go.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Sundancer's, 116 Main St. on the Bass River in West Dennis, has a banner on its homepage: Closing for Retirement November 1.

  • Last posted hours: Friday from 3 PM, Saturday (Halloween) and Sunday from noon.

  • The banner doesn't say whether Sunday is the last day of service. If Sunday's your day, call 508-394-1600 first.

Three posted days, one of them Halloween

The hours page lists three days as of Oct. 28: Friday from 3 PM, Saturday and Sunday from noon, each running to "close." No closing time is posted. Monday through Thursday aren't listed.

The banner's date, Nov. 1, is a Sunday. Counted against the calendar, the posted schedule covers Friday, Oct. 30, Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday itself. One of the three is Halloween.

In June, by our own listing, it was a six-day place. CMC's waterfront roundup on June 24 listed it Tuesday through Sunday from noon for the 2026 season and gave it a three-word verdict: "View tax: none." Six days became three. The river stayed where it was.

None of this is sudden. A Cape Cod Times restaurant roundup on Aug. 20 put the closing in its headline, under "Sundancer's closes."

Sundancer's homepage, over a drone shot of its dock

The count with no names on it

The homepage says Sundancer's has been "one of Cape Cod's favorite waterfront gathering spots for over 34 years." It gives no founding year.

A 2017 family-guide page on the place, last updated in 2022, used its own figure. It called Sundancer's "Cape Cod's favorite waterfront restaurant and nightclub for over 30 years."

Both counts say "over," and neither is a founding date. Side by side, they tell you the name has been on the river a long time, not when it started.

The site also never says who ran which of those years. The 34 belongs to the name on the sign, and that's as far as the public record we could reach goes.

"All seats offer a view"

The homepage makes the promise plainly: indoors, "all seats offer a view of Bass River," and outside there's the waterfront deck. The dining page adds the deck "overlooking beautiful Bass River" and 8 high-definition TVs at the bar.

The river is the reason any of it works. Bass River is the line between Yarmouth and Dennis. Past the Route 28 bridge it winds five more miles into the Cape, and at its widest it opens onto Nantucket Sound.

If you know Sundancer's from a Saturday night, you probably know it by the band. The site still says its entertainment runs on weekends up to Memorial Day and nightly in summer. CMC's Weekender sent readers there for the Jody Moore Band at 9 PM on Saturday, July 11.

As of Oct. 28, both entertainment boxes on the homepage, "Next Up Entertainment" and "Upcoming Entertainment," read the same two words: "No Events."

Sunday at noon, by the posted hours

We haven't found any public word on what comes to 116 Main St. after the banner date, or a filing that says. That part of the ledger is still blank.

What is posted is the date. The banner says Sunday, Nov. 1, and as of Wednesday morning the hours page still opens that Sunday at noon. Whether Sunday is the last day of service or the first day closed, the banner doesn't say.

Before the banner date comes due

Where. Sundancer's, 116 Main St. (Route 28), West Dennis, on the Bass River (directions).

When. Friday, Oct. 30 from 3 PM; Saturday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 1 from noon, each to close, per the restaurant's hours page as of Oct. 28. No closing times are posted.

The catch. The banner reads "Closing for Retirement November 1" and doesn't say whether Sunday is the last day of service or the first day closed. The hours page still lists Sunday. If Sunday is your day, call ahead.
